- Abstract
Objective: To assess the correlation between dietary and oral hygiene habits and the Streptococcus mutans (SM) and biofilm levels in schoolchildren. Method: Eighty-two children aged 6 to 8 years were selected for the study. A questionnaire was applied to the parents and/or caregivers. A wooden spatula was used for collecting saliva and was pressed against a Rodac®plate containing 12 mL of MSKB culture medium. The plates were incubated for 72 hours in anaerobic jars with an atmosphere containing N2 (80%), H2 (10%) and CO2 (10%) at 37oC. The number of colony forming units (CFU) was counted with a stereomicroscope and expressed as scores, according to the following criteria: *0 = absence of SM; *1 = low level (1-10 CFU); *2 = mean level (11-100 CFU); *3 = high level (101- 250 CFU) and *4 = very high level (>250 CFU). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software. Results: 82% of the children had mean level of SM. High and very high levels of SM were observed in 55% of the children that ingested sweets between meals (?2=0.509). Although no significant relationship was found between the SM levels and the oral hygiene habits (p=0.228), the children that brushed the teeth three or more times a day had low or mean SM level. Conclusion: The dietary and oral hygiene habits did not have a statistically significant correlation with neither the SM nor the biofilm levels.
