- Abstract
The quantitative relationships between stratigraphical variables from a succession of coal-bearing cycles deposited in a subsiding basin have been investigated using principal component- and factor analysis, in an attempt to reveal simple relationships undetected by conventional qualitative methods. Knowledge of such relationships will undoubtedly be useful in future computer simulation studies of cyclical sedimentation. Principal component analysis and factor analysis yield similar results, which confirm and amplify those of the trend surface analysis described in READ and DEAN (1967). If the total thickness of strata, total thickness of clastic sediments, number of cycles, number of coals, number of coals 6 inches or more thick and total thickness of coal are considered, the first two principal components account for 90% of the total variance and the variables fail into two groups. One group contains the first three variables, all of which have basin-like regional patterns of sedimentation linked to net subsidence and the other contains the three remaining variables, all of which have wedge-like patterns of regional sedimentation linked to proximity to the shoreline. The first three principal components account for 95% of the total variance. Such a system emphasises a tendency for the number of cycles and the number of coals to be related. Both have regional sedimentation patterns affected by washouts. If the average thickness of cycles and the ratio of elastic sediments to coal are added to the other six variables the grouping becomes confused but thickness of cycles tends to be related to net subsidence.
