Reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is requiring linear bar codes on most prescription medications and nonprescription drugs commonly used in hospitals. Need for health systems to establish quality measures to ensure that bar codes on the products or on labels printed by a hospital's pharmacy can be accurately decoded and read by a scanner; Responsibility of pharmacists to take the lead in developing quality assurance processes to ensure the quality and integrity of all bar-coded medicines dispensed; Importance of the bar codes in patient safety and process efficiency.
