- Abstract
The article presents a cultural and social history of sport in the former Yugoslavia. Particular focus is given to the role played by physical culture in helping Yugoslavia, and its successive societies, develop national identities. The relationship between sports and politics is noted, and a discussion of the functions of sports in militarizing Yugoslavian society during the Balkan Wars and World War I is presented. Other topics include the Sokol sports associations, Yugoslavian historiography, and academic research regarding sacralization, scientification, and militarization within societies.
