- Abstract
The article focuses on African American boxer Bill Richmond who achieved sports star status in 19th century England. Richmond's success is discussed in terms of racial and sociological factors. A combative legacy or tradition, which is said to be inherited by Angolans whose heritage is part of the Black Atlantic slave community, is also discussed. Richmond's evasion skills in professional boxing are discussed. Brief biographical information is given about the former slave who liberated himself during the capture of Staten Island by British troops in colonial America. Social Darwinism is mentioned.
