- Abstract
The investigation that is the subject of this report was designed to determine the attitude of teachers of physical education towards teaching children and young people with disabilities. The participants comprised 29 teachers from the municipalities of Merida, Venezuela. The enquiry was based on the implementation of a survey using the PEATID-III (Physical Educators Teachers Attitude towards Teaching Individuals with Disabilities) questionnaire designed by Rizzo (1993). Data were reported through frequencies and percentages and selected cross-tabulations were undertaken. Results indicate that 90% of the teachers agreed with the concept of teaching children and youth with disabilities in their classes. All teachers strongly agreed with the need to pay greater attention to the teaching - learning process in this situation. With regard to the value of their work in teaching this group, all believed it to be good, important and satisfying. In terms of the age, sex and education of the teachers there was no significant difference in their willingness to teach or their attitude towards and preparation for the teaching process. Recommendations are made concerning the need for teachers to be up-dated and trained further in order to better meet the demands of contemporary Venezuelan society, especially on the assumption of the need to adapt physical activity not only as a right but as a manifestation of human development. In this way it can be better recognised as a valuable and inclusive tool for meeting the needs of individuals with different disabilities.
