- Abstract
Total occlusion of the abdominal aorta is a distinct syndrome in the spectrum of aortoiliac occlusive disease. Doppler ultrasound measurements of blood pressure in the lower extremities show a large pressure drop from the arm to the thigh, with no further drop in arterial pressure distally. Arteriography will localize the point of occlusion, and the patency of the distal vessels can often be demonstrated on delayed films. Atherosclerotic disease distal to the occluded aorta is minimal, making these patients excellent candidates for revascularization. Following end-arterectomy and bypass grafting, all 6 patients in this series are free of claudication and have normal distal arterial pressures.
