- Abstract
It is increasingly recognised that measurable benefits to service users can be achieved through clinical audit by looking at current practice and modifying it where necessary, (1989, White Paper Working for Patients). Therefore, following the development of a Forensic Intensive Care Unit (FICU) within local Forensic Mental Health Services in Staffordshire, it was felt to be both valuable and appropriate to evaluate and audit the impact and contribution of Occupational Therapy to service users' assessment, recovery and care within this specialist area. Newport House, the most recently developed component of the service, was opened in January 2008. During early 2009, following staff recruitment and the establishment of practice since the time of launching this new service, an audit of service user and staff views was conducted. It was envisaged that the clinical audit process would identify whether the introduction of a ward based occupational therapy service would result in a positive effect on the FICU service users and ward team. Areas of good practice and outstanding need in relation to Occupational Therapy practice within this environment would also be identified. Findings have since chartered a journey of further exploration and development to lead effective change resulting in improved care and service delivery.
