- Title
World Music: Appropriation or Transpropriation?
- Authors
Deschênes, Bruno
- Abstract
In world music, hybridization occurs through appropriation. However, this term does not have an antipole, as if all cultural intermixing in arts, in particular world music, can solely be interpreted from the viewpoint of appropriation. In this article, I show that appropriation is a rarely questioned cultural viewpoint on cultural encountered. There exists a term that could potentially be used as its antonym: transpropriation. The author shows that all music encountered in our modern world can not all be viewed from the viewpoint of appropriation. Transpropriation can prove to be a more befitting term in making sense of world music.
