- Title
QT prolongation: A critical adverse effect of some medications.
- Authors
DeDea, Larissa
- Abstract
The article discusses medications that prolong the QT interval, the electrical representation of ventricular depolarization and repolarization, that may result in potentially fatal arrhythmias, such as torsades de pointes (TdP). According to the author, familiarity with the classes of medications causing QT prolongation namely, antiarrhythmics, antibiotics, antidepressants and antipsychotics, is needed by physician assistants (PA) for prevention of a potentially catastrophic adverse effect.
