Accelerated cardiovascular disease in patients with lupus : A review.
- Authors
Seavy, Laura M.; Grosel, John M.
- Abstract
The article discusses systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), found to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). SLE patients had a 7-fold increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD); an immense risk of myocardial infarction (MI), and increased prevalence of coronary artery calcification. The article suggests the need to monitor SLE patients for risk of atherosclerosis, minimize the dose and frequency of corticosteroids, and using anti-phospholipid antibodies and hydroxychloroquine.
