- Abstract
The article presents a discussion on the authority of teachers in education. Recent attempts by organized teachers to increase their power and influence in educational affairs have perhaps decreased their authority among those who have come to see teachers as one greedy special interest group among others. Teachers may have discovered through this experience what many social scientists have yet to discover-that authority and power are not synonymous. Much of the discussion, including that which focuses on the extension of teachers' authority, centers on education in and through schooling. This conception is dangerously faulty today, both factually and normatively. Schools are only one among many socializing agencies that work to shape the minds and characters, the habits, outlooks, and modes of thinking of young people in today's societies. Recreation groups, mass media, churches, various peer-led youthful coteries and conclaves, are only a few of the agencies that, taken together, are more powerful than schools in current processes of enculturation.
