- Abstract
The article discusses the observations of John Lawson, a naturalist and herpetologist, concerning animals in colonial North Carolina and South Carolina. It examines his book "A New Voyage to Carolina," based on his exploration of the Carolinas in the early eighteenth century. The author notes that some animals that Lawson observed are extinct while many species still survive. Animals discussed include American alligators, also called Alligator mississippiensis, killer whales or orca, also called Orcinus orea, and black bears, also called Ursus americanus.
