The article presents the author's views on epic poems in the U.S. and art recognized as great epic. These poems include "The Conquest of Canaan" by Timothy Dwight and "The Vision of Columbus" by Joel Barlow. Also discussed are several cultural work on epic poems, the 1920 thesis "The Theory of the Novel" by George Lukács, and Thomas Cole's "The Course of Empire" series of paintings.
