- Title
Hulk Smashed! The Rhetoric of Alcoholism in Television's Incredible Hulk.
- Authors
BROWN, JOSEPH F.; Brown, Joseph F.
- Abstract
The article discusses the theme of alcoholism in the 1978 television series "The Incredible Hulk". According to the author, the series provided audiences with an image of a recovering alcoholic who was neither a victim or an immoral villain but who determined his own worth through his willingness to become politically active and help other recovering addicts. It is suggested that the film offered a more optimistic view of recovery from alcoholism than had been offered at previous historical moments. Details related to the depiction of the organization Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in the series and to the character David Banner's relationship with his alter ego the Hulk are also presented. Other topics include addiction and the political aspects of alcohol control.
