SHAROT, STEPHEN
- Abstract
The article discusses depictions of social class and romantic love in early U.S. motion pictures. The author reflects on the relationship between depictions of consumerism and cross-class romance in films such as "The Gold Diggers," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," and "The Price of a Good Time." Emphasis is given to the dilemmas and tensions between disinterestedness in love and costs and benefits arising from class and social status aspirations. Other topics include marriage in motion pictures, the moral reformation of characters, and overcoming social barriers.
