This article is drawn from a research project carried out during post-ordination studies. It reflects on the use of the psalms in Christian worship across the centuries, especially in non-conformist churches. The light of the Psalms is also allowed to illuminate the lives of two men, in a form of reflection and refraction: one from the early nineteenth century, the other from the early twentieth century.
