- Abstract
This study is carried out from an innovative point of view and is based on original sources, primarily the Simanca archives, the General Archive of the Indies and the Ducal of Medina Sidonia. The hypothesis, unexplored by historiography, is that a significant portion of the financing–several fold greater than the funds provided by lenders– for Christopher Columbus’s voyage, which allowed for arrival to American soil, came from, according to source documents, contemporary contributions and increased taxes imposed on residents living along the Tinto River where the overseas project was managed. This study reveals, in a novel way, the strategy employed by the Crown to obtain resources that might have allowed for Christopher Columbus’s voyage and paid for part of the coastal property infrastructure required by the expedition, including the purchase of the port of Palos.
