López identifies the origins of her writing career in a short story writing class in the third grade, notes the authors who influenced her early career, including Jane Austen, E.M. Forster, and George Orwell, and defines Latino literature as American literature written in English by authors of Hispanic heritage who define themselves as Latinos and live in the United States.
