- Abstract
Counselling in palliative care is important and needed, especially in the terminal stages of the disease, when the patient no longer benefits from curative therapies. Counselling should be adapted to the diagnosis, symptomatology, evolutionary stage of the disease, and patient's experiences and age. The counsellor is required to be part of the palliative care team and to be trained as a psychologist. It is recommended that the other members of the team should be familiar with the counselling methods and provide counselling, along with other missions within the team. Counselling also addresses family members during both the care period as well as and the mourning period. Prior to start counselling, the counsellor should be fully informed about the patient's specific problems - diagnosis, longevity, etc.
