- Abstract
Since the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action improvement has been achieved in terms of women’s political participation worldwide. Still, this progress and women’s political participation very much depends on the country itself, its culture and structure. There are countries that have achieved bigger progress and serve as a good example for other countries, but it should be pointed out that there is no one model that fits all countries, as in order to have an efficient implementation of the strategy for the enhancement of women’s political participation in one country, differences must be taken into consideration. Despite gender discrimination, women often undergo other forms of discrimination as a result of their race, ethnicity and their social and economic status. In the process of adopting policies more respect should be given to how these issues criss-cross with each other as well as more understanding as to how they can be resolved. These differences contribute to the different level of women’s representation – the measures that promote women’s political activism should support not only women from majority communities. The pressure for changes more often comes from international and regional organizations, and the measures are implemented through governmental programs, legislation as well as political parties and civil society activities. Most countries have taken steps and commitment for the enhancement of women’s political participation through the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Platform for Action, as well as other international documents. The 2015 United Nations Summit saw countries engage to the Agenda on Sustainable Development 2030 that includes a special developmental goal on gender equality and emancipation of women.
