- Abstract
Council of Europe and the European Union have a long tradition of cooperation, based on shared values: respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, rule of law and protection of democracy. Through the coordination and partnership these organizations use each other's comparative advantages and avoid duplications of activities, thus promoting a greater unity and stability in Europe and providing greater respect for the shared values. Council of Europe and the European Union cooperate in all areas of common interest that are to mutual benefit of both organizations. In the framework of this cooperation, they implement joint programs, consult on questions of mutual interest, exchange information and develop strategies, programs and common initiatives. Council of Europe and the European Union acknowledge each other's experience and standard setting work. The European Union recognizes the significance of the Council of Europe as human rights standard setting organization. Of great importance is the European Union accession to the European convention on human rights that will contribute to greater coherence of the European human rights protection system.
