Abstract
The article focuses on Saint Joseph who tended to be represented as a marginal figure in the Bible. Topics discussed include the depiction of Joseph in Saint Matthew's Gospel and the translation from the biblical Greek, Georges de La Tour's chiaroscuro painting which depicted Joseph's more central role as a father figure to Jesus and guardian of both Jesus and Mary, and the painting's emphasis of the importance of nuclear family in the 17th century.
