- Abstract
Conventional electronystagmography can be performed in cochlear implant (CI) candidates with the purpose to preoperatively choose the optimal ear. Taking into account the recent increase of very young and very old CI recipients, it is important to know which preoperative variables could predict postoperative vestibular degradation. Unfortunately, ENG/VNG is not always possible in young children. This keynote lecture will focus on the vestibular assessment based on more than 500 CI subjects in which we have obtained vestibular data at different frequency ranges: preoperative versus postoperative vestibular changes are addressed, covering caloric irrigation, rotary chair tests, vestibular evoked myogenic (VEMP) responses and video head impulse tests (vHIT) of all semicircular canals - i.e., including LARP and RALP movements. High-frequency obtained VOR recordings revealed to be a very fast and handy tool to assess preoperative vestibular loss in adults and children (<6 years old), but even in very young babies, combining a friendly child-parent interaction, less unwanted head movements (i.e., noise), illuminated room circumstances, without the use of goggles or electrodes, thus making this method more child-friendly.
