- Abstract
This article presents information on the book "Family Therapy With Ethnic Minorities," by Man Keung Ho. The first chapter provides a theoretical framework for therapy with ethnic minority families. Six factors distinguish minority families from mainstream families, ethnic minority reality, impact of the external system on minority cultures, biculturalism, ethnicity difference in minority status, ethnicity and language and ethnicity and social class. Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theories are not incorporated, rather this is framed around an ecological family systemic approach because it takes into account the person in the environment. This approach as it relates to ethnic family therapy is briefly described. Practice principles are outlined, including the belief that family problems are either environmental deficits, transactional difficulties, adaptive strategies, or interruptions in growth and development. Therapy interventions are directed towards multivariate systems, adaptation of existing theories to fit cultural practices and beliefs is encouraged.
