- Abstract
Tectonic plates that make the face of Earth as we know it today are constantly moving. This process cannot be stopped just like mutual interactions of plates. At the plate boundaries earthquakes are inevitable, regardless of its intensity. We cannot influence some effects of earthquake, such as liquefaction, except by giving recommendation on avoiding building in such places. Since the most areas with liquefaction potential are already densely urbanized, in such areas we should rely on technology possibilities. Soil liquefaction caused by the earthquake is an important factor of urban seismic hazard. The effects of liquefaction in built-up areas can be extremely harmful. Technology evolvement presents a variety of new opportunities for preventive actions in areas endangered by liquefaction, of which the most common are various possibilities of foundations, drain performance, gravel piles, soil compaction, and other.
