- Abstract
Learning and teaching is a much debated subject in all teaching institutions at this time. It is interesting in itself that we talk about teaching institutions, not learning institutions. As we become more customer-focused, that is putting the learner at the centre of our thinking, it becomes increasingly obvious that today's student will wish to direct the pace and timing of his learning as well as to draw on his own experience, especially where the learning may be taking place in the workplace. Experiential learning becomes increasingly important as does self-directed and independent learning. Whilst it may be relatively easy to decide what curriculum may be offered to a learner, or to support a learner's personal or workplace development and the nature of the awards, there needs also to be a well considered articulation of the method of delivery of that learning. Closely allied to this is the way in which learners need to be supported for example through registration, advice and guidance on appropriate courses and how to get the best out of studying, information about and feedback on assessment.
