- Abstract
Prosody is a linguistic aspect little studied, in spite of its importance in oral communication. This is particular important if considered as a pragmalinguistic element in the study of attenuation. The objective of this study is to describe tone parameters and tone duration in attenuation found in non polite expressions from the Spanish spoken in Mérida, Venezuela (EHM, in Spanish). This study, made at the Laboratory of Phonetics of the University of Los Andes, is a part of a major research project focused on describing tone subsystems of oral language in order to get an overall map description of EHM intonation system. Tonal parameters were obtained from forty attenuated utterances, using ToBi transcription system. Results show that EHM intonation parameter is H*+L. This tonal parameter is textualized by whether an attenuated phrase or by some attenuated markers. Duration of attenuated syllables usually takes twice the duration of those syllables with no function of attenuation. Therefore, it is suggested to include a duration unit in the transcription system.
