- Title
Management Education in India: Protecting it from the Rankings Onslaught.
- Authors

- Abstract
The demand for management education in India has seen tremendous growth since the economy was liberalized The ranking of management institutes has fanned as well as benefited from this boom. I believe that most of these rankings are inherently flawed, and provide misinformation hiding behind the garb of 'scientific' processes. I argue that, unless checked, ranking of management institutes by a particular magazine or media outlet may get institutionalized, as the Business Week rankings have been in the US. Once this happens, the rankings are going to hurt rather than help management education in India by distorting the priorities of management institutes. I further argue that the prominent management institutes, including the IIMs, should work together to develop a credible system of information dissemination that provides full disclosure to all stakeholders and at the same time, allows each institute to highlight its distinctive capabilities, without the fear of manipulation or coercion emerging from arbitrary rankings by the media.
