- Title
New DNA Committee Further Eases Research Controls.
- Authors
Henig, Robin Marantz
- Abstract
The article presents information on the guidelines by the NIH Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (known as the RAC). It states that the NIH guidelines would permit recombination of nonhuman DNA with human cells, and would allow such exchanges at the lowest level of physical containment. It mentions about the RAC recommended two new HV1 systems (host-vector, first-level biological containment) systems of eukaryotes for recombinant DNresearch. It also states that the RAC is willing to certify eukaryotes as host-vector systems, though some committee members were concerned that the standards established for E. coli EK1 and EK2 might be inappropriate for the new HV1 and HV2 systems. It also talks about the risk assessment and the safety of the new HV1 and HV2 systems. INSET: HEW Secretary Strokes NIH.
