PORPOISE PROTECTION FROM SHARKS.
- Abstract
The article reports on the study of training porpoise as watchdog of divers from the attack of sharks through repeated commands. The study was initiated by Perry W. Gilbert and Blair Irvine from the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida. It is designed for the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to guard and protect divers while they are working underwater. It is conducted for 18 months in 2 salt-water tanks using four species of sharks namely lemon, brown, nurse and bull sharks. It trained the porpoise to attack sharks when a sound signal with a specific frequency was projected into the water.
