- Title
Etiquette and Table Manners in Larra's ‘El castellano viejo’: Another Point of View.
- Authors
Mandrell, James
- Abstract
Critics have long speculated on sources for Mariano José de Larra's ‘El castellano viejo’. This article proposes another possible source, an anonymous short essay on etiquette included in a Spanish translation of Joseph Berchoux's La Gastronomie; ou, L'homme des champs à table, pour servir de suite à L'homme des champs. Careful comparison of the anonymous essay and Larra's ‘El castellano viejo’ reveals enough similarities in topic, language and tone to suggest that Larra was well familiar with it. A transcription of the anonymous essay is included in an Appendix.
