- Abstract
Mehmet Tuğrul (1905-1970), who became an assistant to Pertev Naili Boratav in 1942, prepared the first doctoral thesis in folklore in Turkey, under the supervision of Boratav, and successfully defended it in 1946. Because of Boratav who works within the framework of the French folklore, the principle of publishing the compiled material as it is, was applied in this thesis, therefore, sexually explicit and abusive texts were also included in the scope of the study. Thus, the world of folk narratives of a village in Western Anatolia was given as a whole. However, in the book publication of this thesis by the Ministry of National Education in 1969, seventeen tales, nine anecdotes, and one legend were completely removed from the text that were somehow "inappropriate"; and a significant number of narratives have also been "sterilized" by removing profanity. Therefore, the work has been made "suitable" for publication with peace in mind in line with the expectations of the nationalistic romantic folklore understanding and this version has been referred to for many years in folklore studies.
