- Abstract
Compassion is defined as an emotion that occurs while witnessing someone else's pain and then triggers a desire to help. Compassion is one of the important characteristics that affects human life and is seen as an important component of personal, interpersonal and social peace. However, some people may have difficulty in acting compassionately towards both themselves and other people. This situation is called as the fear of compassion. The aim of this study is to develop the Fear of Compassion scale to determine adults' fear of compassion. In order to determine the psychometric properties of the scale, data were collected from 556 adults. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, 20 items were collected under two factors (Fear of Compassion to Others and Fear of Self-Compassion) and the two-factor structure explained 60.19% of the total variance. This two-factor structure was tested by confirmatory factor analysis and it was found that the obtained fit values (X2/sd= 1.912; RMSEA=.057, RMR=.032, IFI=.96, CFI=.96, NFI=.92, RFI=.91, GFI=.90, AGFI=.87, SRMR=.045) showed good fit. The split-half reliability coefficient of the Fear of Compassion scale was .835 and the internal consistency coefficient was .945. As a result, it was determined that the Fear of Compassion Scale developed to determine adults' fear of compassion, was a valid and reliable measurement tool.
