- Abstract
The peculiar life of Canuto González, a bartender in the outskirts of Madrid, highlights some key issues faced by modern urban society around the turn of the twentieth century. At first, the study addresses the uncontrolled emergence of working-class suburbs beyond the boundaries of the planned city. Secondly, the article analyses the tensions that liberal elite faced in order to ensure the obedience and integration of these neighbourhoods. Finally, the study examines the making of a counterhegemonic, street-based and spatialised political culture that challenged the power of urban and national authorities.
