- Abstract
News briefs on materials processing are presented. A system for detecting nonmetallic inclusions in steel alloys has been developed by Leica Microsystems. The Fraunhofer Institute in Darnstadt, Germany has created a sensor system allowing engineers to continuously monitor aircraft for metal fatigue cracks. A mini spectrometer the size of a pea has been designed for stabilizing and calibrating precision lasers by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
