- Title
titanium-intensive howitzer tube made by flowforming.
- Abstract
The article presents information on titanium-intensive howitzer tube made by flow-forming. The M777 Lightweight 155 mm Howitzer (LW155) is a titanium-intensive gun targeted as a replacement for the aging, steel-intensive M198 155 mm Howitzers used by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. The LW155's cradle tube, which provides structural support to the cannon assembly and recoil systems, is a component targeted for improvement by utilizing Ti-6AI-4V by the National Center for Excellence in Metalworking Technology (NCEMT), Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The NCEMT was tasked with identifying a cradle tube production method that reduces costs and produces less waste than the existing extrusion and machining process.
