Condom use, alcohol, and alcohol-related personality changes: A view from Russia.
- Authors
Jargin, Sergei V.
- Abstract
Abortion rate in the former Soviet Union was reported to be the highest in the world, which was caused by insufficient availability of modern contraception and frequent non-use of condoms. Alcohol abuse and heavy binge drinking were generally perceived as factors contributing to the non-use of condoms. The association between alcohol abuse and high-risk sexual behavior is explainable within the scope of the alcohol myopia theory, according to which, alcohol reduces the cognitive capacity and causes people to focus on the cues that are most salient in the environment. The prevailing opinion in the literature is that heavy binge drinking and alcohol consumption at sexual relations are risk factors for the non-use of condoms. Moreover, the irresponsible behavior is apparently favored by slowly progressive personality changes developing under the influence of chronic alcohol abuse and heavy binge drinking.
