- Abstract
Architect Sinan was the chief architect of the Ottomans for fifty years, during which period he developed more than 300 hundred projects. Several of these were located in Bosnia, but today only the Karagozbey Mosque in Mostar and the Sokolovic Bridge over the River Drina remain standing. In addition to the imperial family, Architect Sinan was commissioned by statesmen and people from all ranks of society to design works for them. Grand Viziers Rustem Pasha and Sokollu Mehmet Pasha occupy a special place among them. Both came from Bosnia and were married to Ottoman princesses. With the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the architectural works of Architect Sinan found themselves in several countries of the Balkans and the Middle East. With their high quality of design and variety of functions, his works constitute a legacy which links us to the art of the sixteenth century and to the people who initiated their creation. It is important to know more about this heritage to have a deeper understanding of its value and to develop proper strategies for its preservation.
