- Abstract
The article discusses the predominance of disease, doctors and patients in the writings of author Willa Cather, including the books "Shadows on the Rock," "The Song of the Lark," "Sapphira and the Slave Girl," "My Mortal Enemy," "O Pioneers!" and "The Professor's House." The author notes that Cather presented herself as William Cather, MD for years beginning at the age of 14 and went on to dissect animals and act as an aid to physicians during the Red Cloud war. A relationship between Cather's mother and her doctor is discussed. Gender roles in medicine as seen by Cather are presented.
