Time and Memory in Sapphira and the Slave Girl: Sex, Abuse, and Art.
- Authors
Wolff, Cynthia Griffin; Rosowski, Susan J.
- Abstract
The article deals with the writings of author Willa Cather about sexual behavior in her novel "Sapphira and the Slave Girl." According to the author, this book was the only one of Cather's to address slavery. Cather's habit of withholding information is discussed, with several assumptions for this behavior, including the author's presumed lesbianism and her career as a female writer. The presence of sexual brutality in her works, including the book "My Ántonia," "Death Comes for the Archbishop," and "The Song of the Lark," is discussed.
