- Abstract
The exploitation of gold in gold-bearing gravel present in the river channels of the Amazon region is carried out in a random manner, using suction and scarification dredges. Such a condition remobilizes and increases the volume of sediment suspended along the rivers. Consequently, it intensifies sedimentation and erosion along riverbanks. This work presents results of seismic investigations carried out with the objective of verifying the efficiency of the high-resolution seismic reflection in the identification of possible geological traps of auriferous gravels present in the channel of the river Peixoto de Azevedo. Data acquisition occurred during the flooding period in a 2700 meters section of the river, with a sub bottom profiler set to emit seismic signals in frequencies of 2 to 15 Hz. The results allowed the identification of 3 seismic facies and 2 reflection. Seismic facies are related to the present sandy sediments of the Peixoto river channel (Sf1), to the oldest clayey and sedimentary sediments (paleosediments, Sf2), and to the igneous rocks of the basement (Sf3). The reflection surfaces correspond to the interfaces between the present sandy deposits of the river channel and the paleosediments (Ss), and between the paleosediments and the igneous rocks of the basement (Sr). Throughout the seismic sections we notice deflections on the surface Sr which indicates potential traps of auriferous gravels.
