- Abstract
This article discusses the controversies surrounding the identification of the true origins of human neutrophils. Neutrophils and monocytes are important components of the innate immune system and play a crucial role in responding to foreign microorganisms and tissue perturbations. The article explores two alternative scenarios for the regulation of neutrophil and monocyte production, and discusses the use of novel technologies to better understand the developmental steps and lineage commitment of these cells. The study presented in the article provides evidence that human neutrophil-committed progenitors are indeed committed to neutrophil production and do not give rise to monocytic cells. The article emphasizes the phenotypic plasticity of human myeloid cells and the importance of using multiple experimental approaches to study their development.
