- Abstract
This article presents information on renal manifestations of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. HCV is a major cause of chronic liver disease, but it is also associated with extrahepatic manifestations, including mixed cryoglobulinemia and glomerulonephritis. The principal type of glomerulonephritis observed is either a cryoglobulinemic-type of MPGN, or MPGN type I. Initial epidemiologic studies suggest that HCV infection may be a major cause of both types of glomerulonephritis. Patients with glomerulonephritis may have no clinical evidence for systemic or liver involvement, and liver function tests may be normal. These patients usually have hypoeomplementemia, circulating rheumatoid factors, and in two thirds of cases, cryoglobulinemia.
