- Abstract
The article examines the history of valiha which is the national instrument of Madagascar and the only instrument depicted on a national banknote, highlighting its symbolism, imagery, and social function. Topics include the valiha's visual development, its role in the Malagasy musical culture, and why it became Madagascar's national instrument. Also discussed are the cultural symbols decorating the valiha.
