- Abstract
The article describes a group assignment to describe and analyze how particular historical themes or periods such as the Middle Ages are used in different contexts in contemporary society. Other themes and periods include Vikings, pirates, botanist Carl Linnaeus, World War II, and communism. The author discusses student presentations and a theoretical model and typology developed by historian Klas-Göran Karlsson. Other topics include commercial aspects of mythic history, tourism and local identity, and the political uses of history.
