- Abstract
Based on the available documents, in particular the analysis of last wills from the State Archives in Dubrovnik chosen pursuant to Vlaichi’s genealogy of the Antonines, as well as historiographical findings, the historical role and the activities of the members of one of the most important noble lineages from Ulcinj are discussed. The chronological, genealogical and onomastic compatibility of this lineage to expatriates of Ulcinj, Antonines the Gabros from Dubrovnik are pointed to. Prominent nobility of Ulcinj from the 14th century, supporters of the Balšić dynasty, credit trade participants and investors, also had their property in Valdanos. The Dabris made their mark of presence in Ulcinj and Dubrovnik not only with the significant testimonies of the economic and cultural past, but the development of the political situation in their homeland reflected in the role of this lineage in a much wider geopolitical area. It was the limitrophy of their native commune that made linguistically competent the Dabris, along with their relatives involved into a well-organized and developed intelligence activity, that would give them a prominent position at the diplomatic representations of foreign countries in the Ottoman Empire. Trade exchange between interdependent entities, as well as provision and delivery of information between opposed but interacting parties, imbued by mutal interests, will create an opportunity for members of the Dabri lineage to gain - through the most influential diplomats of the time - significant roles in the fervent war events caused by the Ottoman breakthrough into Central Europe. However, in these turmoils and grounbreaking events, the Dabris, with the fates of their youngest offspring, at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, will rapidly vanish from the historical scene. The prosopographical elaboration of the biographies of members of the Dabri lineage and the synthesis of relevant data provide an insight into the social life of their native emporium, their subsequent refuges in imperial centers and peripheral “watchtowers”, the centuries-old, multilayered and important, abruptly interrupted historical vertical of the Mediterranean.
