- Abstract
The article discusses the obligations enforced on members of the legal profession to perjury through the American Bar Association (ABA) model rules of professional conduct from its 13th century origin. Topics discussed include the 16th century trial of an English diplomat and politician Nickolas Throckmorton, which explains the practice of perjury in England and colonial America, and the 19th century decision to abandon the rule that prohibits sworn testimony by criminal defendants.
