- Title
ARBITERS OF TASTE: AN AFTERWORD.
- Authors
Oring, Elliott
- Abstract
The article focuses on the term bad taste, as a nexus for the discussion of the role of speech and behavior in a complex society. Bad taste is not purely a moral violation. A tasteless expression may fundamentally involve a moral violation, but some aesthetic element would still seem critical to its definition. Thus bad taste is a violation of a system of rules understood to govern a field of expression and interaction. The article reveals the complicity of the media in the creation of bad taste. What the media purports to define and describe as bad taste is most often an expression that they were instrumental in creating.
