- Abstract
This note presents previously unpublished archival documentation on the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a Mamluk enameled beaker now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (OA6131). The object is considered in the context of the place and period in which it was found (the Umbrian town of Orvieto in 1899). That time was characterized by extensive activity in clandestine excavations and the dispersal of significant historical and artistic artifacts brought to light from the late 1800s through the first decade of the 20th century. The beaker was found in the deconsecrated church of Santa Margherita under the altar that was demolished in April 1899 to transform the church into a private dwelling. It had been used as a reliquary, and at the time it was discovered, it contained ashes as well as a small glass phiale. Regarded at the time as a Venetian imitation of "Arab" glass, the beaker found its way into the antiquarian market within days following its discovery. The author suggests that the likely date for its placement under the altar coincides with the year 1312, when Margherita Aldebrandeschi enlarged her eponymous church.
